One of the most popular sites is Find
a Grave. Here is a little info to get you started.

“Find a Grave's mission is to help people from all over
the world work together to find, record and present final disposition
information as a virtual cemetery experience.” (Find a Grave)

Powered by volunteers, Find a Grave was Initially created in
1995 by Jim Tipton who liked to locate graves of famous people. It has grown to
include people from all walks of life and is an amazing source of information
about some of them. Find a Grave became a subsidiary of Ancestry® in 2013. A
quick look at the collections available through Ancestry® yields a total of nearly
220 million memorials! This site is free, easy to use, offers iOS and Android
apps, memorial search, cemetery search, and other options. It is absolutely
worth becoming familiar with Find a Grave. You never know what you might find
to assist you in furthering the information about your family.

I searched through collection after collection, and all over the internet, only to be let down. It was frustrating, and I kept believing I would find what I was looking for in the next set of records.

Each day, on my phone, I get a 'quote of the day.' Just the other day, the quote was this one attributed to Thomas Edison. It read,

"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."

It occurred to me how fully this applies to genealogical research. We search and search and search and search, sometimes with what feels like no success. But, if we look at it the way Thomas Edison apparently viewed his work, we would see that we have been successful; successful in eliminating resources, giving us the ability to move forward with what we don't know toward what we can know. No wonder we jump for joy (or cry out!) when we finally hit the jackpot with even one piece of new information for our ancestor!

I very much appreciate being reminded of this. Now, to carry on...

Missing was the hustle and bustle of the crowds, meeting up with old friends, perusing the seemingly endless rows of exhibitors, and the in-person learning from our favorite speakers. It was still an event worth virtually attending, and may even have some advantages. With over 1500 presentations, or sessions, in at least 11 languages, there was definitely something for everyone. Because there were over a million registered attendees from at least 242 countries, the Relatives at RootsTech feature took on a whole new meaning; and the keynote addresses, the sessions, even the Expo Hall, remain available to us for FREE the rest of the year, perhaps beyond!

On Friday, March 19th, I had the privilege of presenting a "RootsTech Rewind" to my friends at the Bainbridge Island Genealogical Society (BIGS), over Zoom, of course. Deciding how to take my own very positive experience with RootsTech Connect and present it in a way that would encourage others to partake of the vast amount of information and inspiration was tricky. In the end, I thought about the interests of the members of BIGS and tailored the presentation toward those interests. It was fun!

For those who have not yet clicked into the RootsTech Connect world, I say 'do it!' Just go to the home page HERE. The site can be overwhelming because of how much is there, and because you decide what you want to do. It's not like logging into a virtual conference and watching a prescribed number of classes in a prescribed order. It's more like a Choose Your Own Adventure experience. Bonus: you don't have to make a big time commitment. Most of the sessions are 20 minutes or less.

I recommend starting with the 'Guide Me' link. The wonderful RootsTech people created some themed collections of sessions. Once you get going, you'll begin to think about some of your own research interests and goals. Then, delve into the 'Sessions' where you can search by topic, location, even presenter names; or just scroll down the page. You will be blown away by the education you can receive through this one web site. Did I mention it is FREE and available all year?

You will find a variety of inspirational presentations in the 'Keynotes' collection. And, don't forget to visit the Expo Hall where you will find much more that advertising. Many of the exhibitors also created educational videos that are not found through the sessions search. Getting the idea? There is a LOT to see here.

I hope many of you will make the leap and give RootsTech Connect a chance. The ability to make a playlist is also built into the site. You sign in with your FamilySearch account and add sessions you want to view later to your playlist. You can tailor-make a family history course for yourself. It's a win-win! Oh. And it's FREE :) See you when you come up for air!

John is buried at the Antietam National Cemetery in Sharpsburg, Maryland. He is the only one of my ancestors that I know of who died during his war-time service. He has been greatly honored and remembered among his descendants.

Clicking on his name (above) will take you to an article I wrote for a previous Memorial Day.

John's daughter, my second great-grandmother, Virginia C. (Topping) Morgan was just five months old when her father died. A poem she wrote for him in her later years can be found here.
Today, familysearch.org reminded me that my 2nd great-grandmother, Virginia Caroline (Topping) Morgan would be 157 years old today. Oh! It would be so cool if she had lived so long. The stories she could tell. She was an interesting lady and a prolific writer. She has had a great influence on our family, though many of us never met her.

I am hopeful we will be able to collaborate our research to discover how our families are related to each other, and to extend our family lines further in England.

I also have that her parents are John and Elizabeth (Conger) Sutton. The above information is what I will start with in this five minute exercise. This was received many years ago from a distant relation who had documented very well the family information she researched and willingly shared. I am grateful for the hours and hours of work she did to locate the data we have. I will see if I can find anything new to add to this record. Here goes!

At FamilySearch, Elizabeth has a record showing her married to John Molleson, Jr. There are six children included in the record. At Ancestry.com, in the time allotted, I found only undocumented family trees, none of which included a marriage. If she did die before 1750, which seems plausible, I believe I will need to do a much more specific and time-consuming search of records local to where she lived, including church records. Also, searching out information about her husband may be beneficial, too. I am totally willing to do that, if I can locate them. So, signing out, for now.

d. 25 November 1929

Olivia is the daughter of Gustavus C. and Susannah (Cowger) Cowger (yes, her maiden name is correct; they were cousins). She is my third great grandaunt. Because I know quite a bit about her parents, I have a fairly well documented history of Olivia's growing up years. Today, I choose to see what I can discover about her adult life.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That was a surprisingly frustrating exercise!
There was no record for Olivia that I could locate in either Find A Grave or Billion Graves. I searched for her husband, too, hoping to locate her through him. Neither of them showed!
There is, as expected, a record for Olivia in FamilySearchFamily Tree. Her husband's full name is John Fletcher Livezey (note the different spelling). In a Google search, there were several references to a person with that name being involved in lawsuits in Indiana. Could very well be him.
FamilySearch also has a link to the 1910 census for her family. They lived in New Castle, Henry County, Indiana. They had four Roomers and a Servant in the household, no children residing with them. It does record that Olivia had four children and that they were all living. She and John had been married 35 years. Their home is a ‘Boarding House.’
Their son, John William, was married in 1908 in Henry County, giving his residence as New Castle. Their son, Harry, was married in Henry County in 1913. His residence is recorded as Battle Creek, Michigan. The other two children included in the Family Tree record are Alfred and Addie.
I’m sure a little more searching and surfing will be more satisfying, but for the purposes of this project – “Th-th-that’s all, folks!”
McCleary, "Holy Baptism Records," database Ament family.) However, he lived to serve in the United States Navy, enlisting in Boston, Massachusetts in 1890.
On the 1920 census, taken 10 January, he is a patient in Monson State Hospital in Monson, Massachusetts. It says he is epileptic, and single. He died on 29 February that same year and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Muscatine. Where did he die? Massachusetts? Iowa? Maybe this search will reveal. I have no idea what else might be in cyberspace for Hugh.
Poor Hugh! He is buried where many of the Ament family members are buried, though; so, a family member must have retrieved his body.
