Backward Glance - Claire Elise Marguerat

One of the people I have loved the best, and who loved me back, was Claire Elise (Marguerat) Hoyle. She was my grandma. Her life began in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, on May 14, 1903. She was born into affluence, and spent at least the first seven years of her life living with her paternal grandparents, Eugene and Grace (Coryell) Marguerat. Her grandfather was always an important, kind and influential person in her life. She had a great love for him and loved to share stories about his life. He died in 1907. Claire and Helen may have lived in Chicago as late as 1915, when their grandmother passed away.

Claire's parents were Henri Debonneville and Mabel Elizabeth (Ament) Marguerat. They were married in Chicago in 1902, but divorced in 1908. Claire had a younger sister, Helen Amelia, who was born on August 15, 1905, also in Chicago. In 1910, both Claire and Helen were enumerated with their grandparents and their father. Mabel had moved on, probably to Montana, where she filed a homestead claim in 1913.

Abbie (Martin) Ament, Claire's grandmother, had a bakery in Froid, Montana, for a couple of years. Mabel and her daughters visited there; Claire also worked in the bakery. Mabel had a sister in Beach, North Dakota, Bessie, who was a photographer. Her husband, Charlie Welch, was also a photographer.

In 1918, Claire's mother married Frank Markey. They were married just two years, but the girls attended school in Glendive with Frank's surname. After proving up the homestead in 1920, Mabel sold it in October 1921. She had married Alfred Rowe in January 1921.

In 1922, two corporations were formed in which Claire and her future husband, John Richard Hoyle, were both principals. One company was called 'American Ranch and Trading Company;' the other was called 'The Canadian Rocky Land and Ranch Company Limited.' They were ranching businesses. I've never found any other reference to these corporations, but it shows me that Claire and Jack were acquainted for at least three years before their marriage on June 20, 1925, in Lewistown, Fergus County, Montana.

After their marriage, Claire and Jack moved to Seattle, King County, Washington. They lived in various locations there throughout their marriage. They had five children, all of whom were born in Seattle and all of whom are still living. Their children are Helen Priscilla, Jack Richard, Frank Orris, Robert Carlisle and Ethel Clarise.

Claire loved little children. She was very interested in education of all kinds, mentioning specifically Montessori schooling for children. She was a good cook, providing nutritious and varied meals for her family. She also made great bread. Music was also important to her, and her children learned to play the violin and the piano. They also sang. For many years, Claire supplemented her income by making telephone surveys.

In her later years, Grandma lost her eyesight. She continued to be interested in her family and the world about her. She died on February 1, 1999, in Seattle.

Backward Glance - Elizabeth Tingley

Elizabeth Tingley was the daughter of John Adams and Sarah (Cox) Tingley. As recorded in The Tingley Family Revised, Volume I, compiled by Marian McCauley Frye, she was born in Virginia on December 3, 1811. Her birth year is given as 1813 in the International Genealogical Index. This latter date concurs with the date inscribed on her headstone at the North Platte Cemetery in North Platte, Lincoln County, Nebraska. The Tingley family is an old English family, and can be traced at least as far as William Tingley who was born in about 1588 in Surrey, England. Elizabeth's first American-born Tingley ancestor was Samuel, her third great-grandfather, son of Palmer. He was born before 1638 in Charlestown, Massachusetts. John Adams Tingley, Elizabeth's father, was born in New Jersey, as was his wife, Sarah Cox. They were married in New Jersey, but lived in Virginia and Ohio. John A. Tingley died in 1830 in Fairfield, Greene County, Ohio. Sarah died in 1851, also in Greene County.

In 1835, on March 12th, Elizabeth was married to Elijah Cody Martin in Xenia, Greene County, Ohio. He was the son of Uriah and Rhoda (Stiles) Martin. To this union were born 11 children. Their names were Indiana, William Jasper, Sarah Jane, John Webb, Tamsan Elizabeth, Rhoda, Robert Mercer, Lucy Ellen, Samuel Kinsey Leedham, Rebecca Floral and Abigail C. Elijah and Elizabeth lived in Logan County, Ohio, and Muscatine, Iowa. Elijah died in 1874 in Muscatine.

I have not been able to locate Elizabeth on the 1880 census, so I'm not certain where she lived between Elijah's death and her own. However, the family story was that she lived into her 90's and died in Nebraska. I did find her death and burial information in North Platte, Lincoln County, Nebraska. She died on August 10, 1899, at the age of either 87 or 89, depending on which birth year (1811 or 1813) is correct. Her son, John Webb Martin, also lived in North Platte and is buried in the same cemetery. It seems reasonable that she lived with his family, though John didn't move there until after 1880. So, there is more to find!

Backward Glance - Joseph Pettus Ament

Not to be confused with his uncle, Joseph Ament, to whom Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) was apprenticed in 1848; Joseph Pettus Ament, Jr. was born to William Dudley and Amelia M. (Robbins) Ament on June 6, 1852, in Muscatine, Muscatine County, Iowa. He was the first of seven children born to the couple.

On March 24, 1875, Joseph was married to Abigail C. Martin, also in Muscatine. Abigail was the daughter of Elijah Cody and Elizabeth (Tingley) Martin. Joseph and Abbie had six children: Grace A., Mabel Elizabeth, William Dudley, Bessie, Helen and Vernon. In 1894, Abbie petitioned for a divorce. On January 16, 1898, Abbie received absolute control of the children. By 1900, Abbie and two of her children were living in Chicago, Illinois.

Throughout much his life, Joseph's occupation was that of a carriage and wagon manufacturer, as well as a dealer in farm machinery. In 1876, he was a buggy box maker with Ament & Bro. On the 1880 census, he was listed as a carriage maker. His business was listed in the Muscatine, Iowa Directory in 1891, 1892 and 1893. It was located at 412 to 418 E. Third Street.

Joseph remarried on July 8, 1896, to Mrs. Nina E. (Knox) Walker in Knox County, Illinois. After his marriage to Nina, Joseph was found enumerated on the 1915 Iowa State Census in Davenport, Scott County. His occupation was recorded as a second hand dealer. In 1925, he and Nina were still living in Davenport. There was no occupation recorded.

On January 30, 1927, Joseph died in Davenport. Nina outlived him. Joseph was buried on February 1st in the Greenwood Cemetery in Muscatine, Muscatine, Iowa.

Backward Glance - Elijah Cody Martin

The fifth of ten children, Elijah Cody Martin was born in Steuben County, New York, about June 7, 1808. He died on April 9, 1874, and his birth date is calculated from his age at his death as recorded on his headstone "65y 10mo 2ds." His parents, Uriah and Rhoda (Stiles) Martin, relocated to Greene County, Ohio, before 1816, where Uriah died in 1829.

On March 12, 1835, Elijah married Elizabeth Tingley, daughter of John Adams and Sarah (Cox) Tingley. She was born in Virginia. Elijah and Elizabeth were married in Xenia (pronounced zeen-ya), the county seat of Greene County, by a justice of the peace, William Cozad.

Of their 11 children, the first five were born in Miami Township, Logan County, Ohio. They were Indiana, William Jasper, Sarah Jane, John Webb and Tamsan Elizabeth. The next five children were also born in Logan County. Their names were Rhoda, Robert Mercer, Lucy Ellen, Samuel Kinsey Leedham and Rebecca Floral. Samuel and Rebecca were twins. As Elijah and his family were enumerated in Pleasant Township in 1850, it is likely these children were born there. Elijah's mother died there in 1849. The family removed to Muscatine County, Iowa between 1852 and the birth of the last child, Abigail C., on November 25, 1854.

In 1856, Elijah's family was living in Sugar Creek Township, Cedar County, Iowa; but, they were back in Muscatine County, Bloomington Township, by the time the 1860 Federal Census was taken. In 1870, Elijah, Elizabeth and some of their children were living in Moscow, also in Muscatine County.

Elijah was a farmer. He died in 1874 in Muscatine County. He is buried at the Oakdale Cemetery in Wilton, Iowa. Buried near him is his son-in-law, Levi A. Kellogg.
